The real life of a chap living in Arundel, West Sussex. But he's not really called Del Arun, you know...

Once again, the bakers in Arundel is closing. East West Bakery has been running the place for just over a year but is closing on Saturday 31st May to concentrate on wholesale baking. Which, as I've mentioned before, doesn't leave Arundel devoid of locally-baked bread... but it's still a shame.
As you walk up London Road, choral music fills the air. It's not coming directly from Arundel's Roman Catholic cathedral; instead it's being broadcast from a string of loudspeakers hanging from lamp-posts to entertain a small crowd. "Hallelujah, sing to Jesus...", the disembodied voices urge.Labels: arundel, cathedral, corpus christi
I’m still here in Arundel. As is the “For Sale” sign outside my house. But things are moving in the right direction. I have a potential buyer who’s not part of a chain, who’s arranged a mortgage… and whose mortgage company surveyor came to visit this week.Labels: arundel, black rabbit, corpus christi, del arun, festival, moving
...and there's other news, too. Someone's coming to view on Wednesday morning. I'll make sure I'm out.Labels: arundel, del arun, estate agent, house

Yes, it's true. After much thought and conversation, I'm putting my house (or "two-bedroom character cottage", as I prefer to think of it these days) on the market. My plan is to head over the border to East Sussex, a county that has the benefit of containing my girlfriend.Labels: arundel, del arun, estate agent, house, moving

It looks as though Arundel is trying to become a 'plastic bag'-free town, following in the footsteps of Modbury. Don't get me wrong, replacing 'free' plastic bags with reusable or recyclable bags makes sense... but isn't this a very minor environmental concern in a tourist town such as Arundel?Labels: arundel, del arun, modbury, plastic bag free
Well, the town centre's a bit clearer this week. Not only did we have the Arundel Festival and Fringe all week but we also had plenty of visitors because of the Goodwood Revival at the weekend. I didn't see much of either, although I found time to pop into some of the Arundel Gallery Trail houses (Robert Olliver-Jones's paintings are beautiful, if occasionally disturbing because of the sensation that you're being watched) and to have a glass of wine at the temporary wine bar on the river bank. The photo's from one of the public car parks at Goodwood...
Talking of the Black Rabbit, as I was earlier in the week, it seemed only right to call in for a drink. Labels: arundel, black rabbit, pub
I was pleased to see that Arundel's Black Rabbit was one of The Guardian's "top 100 alfresco venues" in Saturday's newspaper. It doesn't promise a gourmet dining experience, just a decent pint by the river (and an above-average choice of pub food, too). I'd recommend walking down the river and returning via the road - there aren't any street lights but at least you won't fall in.Labels: arundel, black rabbit, del arun
